Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure performed by correcting congenital or trauma-related deformities and reconstructing the nose shape to maintain an aesthetic nose look. Breathing or deviation problems can also be solved during nose surgery by restoring nasal function.

Rhinoplasty surgery can:

– correct the shape of your nose by reshaping, narrowing or widening the bridge or the nostrils.

– reshape the tip of your nose.

– enhance the overall look of your nose.

– help you solve your breathing difficulties.

– correct a deviated nasal septum.

– correct if you have a nasal, cartilage or bone fracture.

The patient is given general anaesthesia for the procedure. The surgeon makes incisions either between the nostrils or hidden inside the nose depending on the surgical technique to be used. The nose skin is separated from the bone and cartilage. Nasal deformities are corrected, and the bone and alar cartilages are reshaped as the patient desires.  If there is breathing difficulty, it is treated as well. The nose tip may be lifted and the nasal hump may be rasped if discussed earlier. The skin is put back closing the incisions with small aesthetic absorbable stitches hidden inside the nose. Lastly, nasal packings are placed in the nostrils and a nasal splint is placed over the nose.

Swelling and bruising around your eyes are normal reactions. You may also experience slight bleeding through your nostrils for the first couple of days after your nose surgery. Any slight or severe pain will be easily dealt with by painkillers. You should apply ice as instructed by your surgeon. Your nasal packings will be removed on the 2nd day and your nasal splint after 7 days. Small nasal bandages may be placed if needed to reduce oedema. Bruising will gradually but fastly subside in 7 days and swelling in 1 month. At this point, your nose will become closer to its final look but you should never forget that it will take between 6-12 months for your nose to settle and achieve its final look. This period may change depending on your nasal skin thickness, nose size, previous nose surgeries and any problems related to scar healing.
