A dental crown is a tooth, usually made of zirconium, that is placed over your natural tooth like a cap. The dental crown procedure can be described as covering a tooth fully with an aesthetic material for restoration purposes.

A dental crown procedure is usually performed in 1 visit and 3-4 sessions. In the first session, the dentist numbs the area with local anaesthesia and prepares the teeth for the treatment by removing the weakened or damaged parts so that they could hold the dental crowns well without any problem. Then the full dental impression is taken for the preparation of the crowns. Temporary crowns are placed on teeth to be used during the preparation period. In this session, the patient is presented with a wide variety of shade options from ultra-bright and white to more natural-looking ones and even yellowish ones. The second session is the rehearsal session. The crowns are tried on the teeth to see if they fit well and if the bite is correct. If there is a problem, it is fixed by adjustments or new measurements. If there is no problem, they are taken to the laboratory for glazing and finishing processes. In the third session, they are cemented into their place.

With regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups, you can help your dental crowns last longer. You can also expand the lifespan of your dental crowns by avoiding certain activities which may increase their wear and tear level such as breaking open a shell (of a kind of nut for example), grinding teeth, biting fingernails etc.
