Cataract surgery is performed just like a lens replacement surgery by replacing the cloudy lens with a clear lens. The eyes are covered with a sterile cloth and then anaesthetized with eye drops. The eyelids are separated with a special equipment called blepharostat so that the patient can not blink during the operation. A 3.2 mm incision is made through a slitting blade or femtosecond laser depending on the surgery type. Through this incision, an opening is made in the lens capsule and the cloudy lens with cataract is fragmented. The fragmented lens is sucked by a sophisticated equipment and the new artificial intraocular lens is centred in the empty lens capsule. Antibiotics are instilled to prevent any infection and the eyes are patched.

Lens replacement and cataract surgery are virtually performed in the same way. The only difference is in cataract surgery the lenses to be replaced are cloudy due to cataract while lens replacement surgery is performed to correct one’s far, near and intermediate focus even if the person does not have cataract.

Trifocal Lenses – Trifocal lenses are the most commonly used intraocular lenses due to the comfort and practicality they provide. Being high-performance lenses, trifocal lenses provide distance, intermediate and near vision, in short, a full focus which basically eliminates the dependency on glasses. 

Toric Lenses – Toric lenses are specially designed to treat astigmatism in addition to the above-mentioned intraocular lens types. Both mono-focal toric and trifocal toric lenses are available.

Yes. Lens replacement surgery can be performed for both eyes. In some cases, 1 or 2 days may be required between the operations. This is determined by the eye surgeon based on the patient’s preoperative tests and eye examinations.

This depends on the intraocular lens type that will be used in your surgery. If mono-focal lenses are used, you might need glasses for reading or working on the computer, generally for near vision since they have only one focus enabling to see distance. If trifocal lenses are used, most probably you will not need any glasses since they have 3 focuses for near, intermediate and far distance.
